NTCA Applauds Reps. Boucher and Terry for Weighing In on Intercarrier Comp

Arlington, Va., October 27, 2008 – The National Telecommunications Cooperative Association (NTCA) today hailed Reps. Rick Boucher (D-Va.) and Lee Terry (R-Neb.) and 60 of their colleagues for their letter to FCC Chairman Kevin Martin in which they call for public review and comment on Martin’s intercarrier compensation and universal service reform proposal.

“NTCA commends Congressmen Boucher and Terry for their efforts to bring much-needed transparency to the intercarrier compensation and universal service reform process that Chairman Martin has undertaken,” said NTCA Vice President, Government Affairs Tom Wacker.  “Martin’s proposal could easily undermine Reps. Boucher, Terry and their colleagues’ own universal service reform efforts that are aimed at enhancing broadband deployment in rural America.”

Senator Ben Nelson was joined by nine of his Senate colleagues in sending a simliar letter.  In addition, nearly one dozen Senators and Representatives have sent their own letters urging the chairman to put his proposal out for full public review and comment.  These members of Congress include: Reps. John G. Barrett (R-S.C.), G.K. Butterfield (D-N.C.), JoAnn Emerson (R-Mo.), Virginia Foxx (R-N.C.), David Hobson (R-Ohio), Bob Latta (R-Ohio), John Shimkus (R-Ill.), Patrick Tiberi (R-Ohio) and Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) and Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Judd Gregg (R-N.H.) and Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)
