The Future of the Network
Carl Russo, CEO of Calix, dropped by the office today while he was in Washington, D.C. for some “inside the beltway” meetings. Carl’s mind can race faster than I can keep up with sometimes–but today we had an interesting chat on where physics meets the economics of the network, a discussion that I am pleased he also was having with policymakers while he was here . We talked about the complementary nature of wireline and wireless networks along with the capacity and immediate gratification needs of today’s consumers. He really understands the value and importance of the network. We talked at length about how important it will be for our industry to continue to build and expand on efficiencies, how to build a business model by managing and monetizing the numerous applications that ride on ILEC networks and how this will transition the role of the telco. Carl also took a few minutes to drop in on our Government Affairs Committee meeting and we discussed the argument that is made by some when fiber is deployed in rural markets and how that deployment is indeed ”future proofing” networks, not ”gold-plating.” While the deployment should be timed appropriately, the applications demanded by consumers will warrant the investment. Its important for vendors and suppliers in our industry to have a voice in these policy discussions and I appreciate Carl’s willingness to compare notes as industry negotiations continue.
