As usual with a new Administration, there is a buzz in the air with political slots that are yet to be filled. The currently open two FCC Commissioner seats are no different. It seems like every few weeks there are rumors of possible candidates and I’ve had three or four calls with possible folks under consideration. While it’s tough to actual endorse someone, it is far less difficult and likely even more important to share what type of candidates one hopes to see for these critical positions so NTCA took the proactive approach and sent a letter to President Trump last week sharing our perspective representing more than 850 rural small business deploying broadband infrastructure in 46 states. In turn, we are keenly aware of the importance – and challenges – of deploying high-speed broadband that responds to the needs of consumers and businesses in rural America, and sows the sustainable seeds of economic development. Recent reports highlighted that the investments and ongoing operations of small rural broadband providers contribute over $24 billion annually to the nation’s gross domestic product, and supported over $100 billion in e-commerce in 2015. That seems worthy of some policy attention from the highest levels, right?
