VOTW: Learning Communities within a High School
And last but not least, our video of the week (VOTW), brought to you by Viodi TV.
Designed around five small learning interests, Colleton County High School in Walterboro, S.C., is a different kind of high school. Cliff Warren, Colleton County High School’s principal, talks about the unique design of this campus, as well as its academic approach of preparing students for career and college. With five schools within a school, it has the feel of a college, while, at the same time, it provides a more family-like atmosphere than the normal campus of 1,600 students.
Their approach allows for a more customized learning plan than traditional high schools. Warren discusses the role of broadband and its ability to extend education to the home. Lastly, he touches upon the program they are starting with Palmetto Rural Telephone Cooperative to create a daily news show that informs both the high school students as well as the community at large.

VOTW: MIT’s Smart Building
And last but not least, our video of the week (VOTW). New tracking technology within the MIT Media Lab monitors everything from social media to office thermostats and workers’ movements.
VOTW: Microsoft’s Tech Vision
In late October, Microsoft released a viral video showcasing its future of technology and productivity.
To which John Pavlus over at FastCodeDesign commented that the video, although sleek and sophisticated, is not realistic for a future that is supposed to exist merely 10 years from now. Perhaps more importantly, these futuristic interfaces are supposed to solve real problems and make life easier — two points that Microsoft misses entirely in its video.
As Pavlus says, “Microsoft’s film is probably going viral as we speak, but imagine how much more reach it would have if it dared to depict a guy stuck in a meeting that sucked, or using his smartphone in an airport that was full of noisy assholes and long lines, or searching his touchscreen-enabled smart refrigerator for a quick meal because his kids are bouncing off the walls and he’s bone-tired from a long day at work?”
Food for thought for independent telcos and your technology-related marketing campaigns.

VOTW: Intel Creates 3D Models with Web Images
And last but not least, our video of the week (VOTW). At the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco, Intel CEO Paul Otellini demos how the company’s processors are being used to render a 3D-model from millions of user-generated images taken from photo-sharing sites such as Flicker and Picasa. The work is being done at the University of Washington, where researchers are using crowd-sourced images from the Web to create 3D re-construction of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City.

VOTW: In Memoriam of Steve Jobs
And last but not least, our video of the week (VOTW). Steve Jobs, co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Apple Inc., passed away on October 5, 2011, at the age of 56 due to complications associated with pancreatic cancer.
There have been some amazing tributes over the past week, in traditional media and online. One of the most accessed clips has been Jobs’ commencement address. At Stanford University’s 114th commencement on June 12, 2005, drawing from some of the most pivotal points in his life, Jobs urged graduates to pursue their dreams and see the opportunities in life’s setbacks — including death itself.
