And last but not least, our video of the week (VOTW). Steve Jobs, co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Apple Inc., passed away on October 5, 2011, at the age of 56 due to complications associated with pancreatic cancer.
There have been some amazing tributes over the past week, in traditional media and online. One of the most accessed clips has been Jobs’ commencement address. VOTW: Verizon to Launch Home Monitoring Service
And last but not least, our video of the week (VOTW). At CES 2011 back in January of this year, Verizon first revealed its new Home Monitoring and Control service. It will allow customers to automate their home’s thermostat, locks, lights and appliances, as well as monitor live video from any portion of the home from a computer, smartphone or FiOS-connected TV.
Verizon officially demoed the service last week at the FTTH Conference & Expo. The telco plans to launch the service October 11. According to published reports, the service will be priced at $9.95 per month, plus the cost of Z-Wave wireless hardware. Initially, it will only be available to Verizon’s DSL and FTTH subscribers, but it will ultimately be sold on its own and could be a linchpin service in Verizon’s larger connected home strategy.

VOTW: Augmented Reality Explained
And last but not least, our video of the week (VOTW). Augmented reality (AR) enables a variety of interactive apps, useful for professional, education and entertainment purposes.
Popular apps include Google Goggles, which enables the user to search the real world by taking a picture. It can even translate words in English, French, Italian, German & Spanish. Lookator is an AR app for finding better WiFi signals. Google Sky Map turns your Android-powered mobile phone into a window on the night sky. Car finder uses AR and RADAR to help you reach your car where you parked it, with the ability to manage up to three cars. VouchAR finds discounts in Local Stores using AR technology. There’s even an app called DishPointer, designed for satellite installers or mobile broadcasters to hold their smartphones up to the sky and receive a virtual overlay of their nearest satellites to know which way to point the dish. And this is the only tip of the iceberg.
