Allied Fiber to Construct Nationwide, Dark Fiber Network

Allied Fiber is moving forward with its plans to build a nationwide, dark fiber and co-location network.

The company is targeting a diverse clientele with a range of telecom needs, including submarine cable systems, large international and domestic wireline and wireless carriers and network operators, as well as small, rural carriers and cable television companies. Allied Fiber plans to provide increased capacity for cell towers, minimize the distance between backhaul network access points and rural service providers, and create new, low-latency routes between New York and Chicago.

Allied Fiber will install a long-haul fiber duct with 432 fibers alongside a short-haul duct system with 216 fibers. The company will also build co-location facilities every 60 miles along the route. According to the company, a rural carrier seeking backhaul connectivity would linkup with the short-haul duct and travel to the nearest collocation point, where it would connect with the nationwide backbone operator.  Allied Fiber plans to sell all connections as dark fiber; the purchasing carrier will be responsible for lighting the fiber.

Construction of the first phase linking New York, N.Y., Chicago, Ill. and Ashburn, Va., is already underway and will cost approximately $140 million. The company has executed definitive agreements with financial partners and several major railroads and right-of-way owners, including Norfolk Southern Railway.

“We created this system to address the numerous backhaul and capacity issues that exist in the marketplace today,” said Allied Fiber CEO Hunter Newby. “We appreciate all of the insight and support we have received from the industry and look forward to delivering our network-neutral, dark fiber, colocation and wireless tower access services to all that need it.”
