DOCSIS 3 Reaches 52 Million U.S. Consumers

Cable operators now offer DOCSIS 3.0 services to more than 52 million U.S. consumers and businesses, according to a survey of the top 11 cable operators by Multichannel News. That figure represents more than 43% of the 120 million homes passed by cable networks in the country.

Cable providers are in different stages, with the likes of Comcast having upgrading the majority of its networks, while Time Warner Cable only offers the advanced technology in one market.

Low take rates for such ultra-high-speed services indicate many subscribers aren’t willing to pay the premium to get the fastest Internet available today. Regardless, DOCSIS 3.0 technology provides an ample runway for next-gen services.

“The cable industry is building out an infrastructure that can handle more bandwidth than customers need,” In-Stat analyst Mike Paxton said. “They’re much better situated than other broadband providers.”
