FCC: Five Commissioners Strong

Last Friday the U.S. Senate unanimously approved the nominations of Mignon Clyburn a Democrat, and Meredith Attwell Baker, a Republican, to the two remaining seats on the FCC.

They join Julius Genachowski, the new FCC chairman, and current commissioners Michael Copps and Robert McDowell, bringing the FCC to full strength for the first time since January. Obama nominated Genachowski, a Democrat, and Republican McDowell for a second term; this will be the first time Democrats have held the three-seat majority since 2001.

Baker is the former acting head of the National Telecommunications & Information Administration. Clyburn is a South Carolina utility regulator and daughter of House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC).

In related news, former FCC former FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein was also approved by unanimous consent on Friday to head the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Utilities Service.
