Live from CES 2012

Another year, another CES is upon us. My sense is that it is much larger than last year’s event. The first day on the show floor I was unable to have a conversation with a vendor because so many people were there. Like in years past, I wanted to write a guest post to offer some insight into items I feel might be of importance to the rural telecom industry. CES: New “Better” TV Sets?

The Leichtman Research Group recently released some interesting data concerning television set ownership in the United States. There is an HDTV-capable TV set in 69% of U.S. households. Further, 48% of U.S.  households have more than one HDTV, and one-third have more than two HDTVs. On the analog side, 45% of TV sets in households are not HDTV-capable, and nearly 60% of all TV sets in the United States are non-HDTV.  Read more

AT&T Gets Out of the ESPN 3D Game

UVERSE sports fans searching for a football to fly through their living rooms will be bereft of that thrill now that AT&T has terminated its contract for ESPN 3D. AT&T cited a confluence of high prices and low demand.

ESPN 3D was introduced in 2010 and has covered the FIFA World Cup, NBA Finals, NCAA football and basketball and Major League Baseball. But despite the assumed thrill of being at the center of the action, too few AT&T customers were interested in paying $10 per month to experience it.  Read more

VOTW: Nat Geo Demonstrates a 3D Printer

And last but not least, our video of the week (VOTW). 3D printing is a form of additive manufacturing technology where a three dimensional object is created by laying down successive layers of material. 3D printers offer product developers the ability to print parts and assemblies made of several materials with different mechanical and physical properties in a single build process. Advanced 3D printing technologies yield models that can serve as product prototypes.

VOTW: Toshiba’s No Glasses 3D TVs

And last but not least, our video of the week (VOTW). Toshiba is readying two new 3D TVs that can produce images with the illusion of depth but don’t require the user to wear glasses.

3D Without the Glasses?

“Autostereoscopic,”  is the term for what Toshiba says it will employ with a new line of 3D television sets that are predicted to be on the market before the end of this year.  The term autostereoscopic is used to describe the process in which the viewer is not required to wear glasses to see the dimensional image.

DIRECTV Adds 3D Channel

The addition of  n3D gives DIRECTV three 3D channels.  n3D sponsored by Panasonic will provide a variety of content including documentary/adventure, concerts and special events.

n3D is available to HD customers at no additional cost.   Customers must have a 3D monitor to experience the  effect.

During July customers will have the opportunity to experience special sporting events.  The MLB All-Star Game in 3D from Fox Sports and the NASCAR Coke 0 400 will be available.

DIRECTV has also added ESPN 3D, where viewers will be able to see 2010 FIFA World Cup action along with other exciting sports.  DIRECTV Cinema will program various movie titles in 3D.
