Dish Network Avoids DVR Shutdown

A federal appeals court today granted Dish Network’s request to rehear its patent case with Tivo.  Tivo held that Dish Network and Echostar had violated the Tivo DVR patent.

In March a lower federal appeals court had ruled in favor of Tivo affirming the finding of a jury trial held in Texas.  The May 14 ruling will allow Dish Network to persuade a new court that it’s DVR software does not violate the Tivo patent.  This ruling effectively vacates the March decision. Dish Network To Offer Place-Shifting Functionality

Sling Media Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of EchoStar Corp., was recently profiled in The New York Times. Sling Media produces Slingbox and other similar stand-alone video hardware products, which start at $180 and plug into televisions. The Slingbox enables users to pipe all of their existing cable and satellite channels over the Internet to any computer or mobile device.

Sling Media has generated media and industry buzz, but as of yet only a few hundred thousand technology geeks have adopted the product. This all may change, however, as the Dish Network plans to offer a set-top box embedded with Sling’s features to its 14 million subscribers across the country, this according to the New York Times. Called the SlingLoaded HD DVR ViP 922, the Times says it will be offered to subscribers for $199. Read more

Canby Telcom Selects EchoStar’s ViP-TV

NTCA member Canby Telcom (Canby, Oregon) announced in late May that it has selected EchoStar Satellite Service’s ViP-TV video transport service to support its expanding HD video base. Under the terms of the deal, Canby will receive transport for up to 42 HD channels directly to its IP headend.

“We choose Echostar’s ViP-TV service as a replacement for the SES Americom HD offering that was canceled effective this July,” said Canby’s General Manager Keith Galitz. Read more
