Frontier to Re-sell AT&T Wireless Service
Frontier Communications Corporation announced November 15 that it has reached a three-year agency agreement with AT&T to re-sell AT&T smartphones, tablets and applications, as well as access to its mobile broadband network.
Frontier will now be able to bundle its broadband, voice and satellite TV services with AT&T wireless service. AT&T Mobility and Frontier plan to trial the offering in the first half of 2012; once operational processes are complete, the offering will be available throughout Frontier’s nationwide footprint. Frontier Evolves its OTT Video Aggregation Play
Frontier Communications announced today that it is expanding its OTT video play with the launch of TumTiki, an online video website that the telco is calling “the largest video library of any web destination site.” TumTiki offers access to more than 700,000 video titles from a combination of traditional broadcast TV and online sources. Of particular note, the service is available to all Internet users, regardless if they are Frontier broadband subscribers. Read more
Frontier and Yahoo! Extend Partnership
Late last week, Frontier Communications Corp. announced that it had expanded its partnership with Yahoo! in a deal that will provide new online experiences to Frontier’s broadband subscribers in 27 states.
Later this year, Frontier customers will be upgraded to a co-branded Frontier-Yahoo! email portal powered by Yahoo! Mail. In addition to traditional e-mail service, Frontier’s subscribers will have access to Yahoo!’s digital content through co-branded websites that will be integrated with the email service. Since the Yahoo! page is customizable, Frontier also will be able to integrate upcoming new products and features.
Frontier Improves Network Performance with Optical Upgrades
On the heels of its recent takeover of Verizon’s rural wireline assets in 14 states, Frontier Communications announced last week that it is deploying new packet-optical transport technology.
To date, approximately 345 reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexer (ROADM) systems have been integrated into Frontier’s networks to improve network flexibility and manageability. By mid-year Frontier plans to add more than 6,500 miles of ROADM network. This new technology is based upon Tellabs optical solutions.

Frontier Moves to Exit FiOS TV Business
Frontier is taking steps to withdraw from the FiOS video business. Last July, the Connecticut-based company acquired wireline assets in 14 states from Verizon, including 100,000 FiOS customers. Frontier recently notified Oregon regulators that it plans to opt out of franchise agreements in McMinnville, Dundee, Newburg and Wilsonville, Ore.
This follows closely on the heels of a Frontier announcement that it plans to hike FiOS TV rates for existing customers. Although Frontier has yet to enact a new rate structure, it speaks volumes about the company’s commitment to FiOS video service. Read more
Verizon to Handover Wireline Assets to Frontier July 1
Verizon Communications announced last week that it will officially handover its wireline assets in 13 states plus parts of California to Frontier on July 1.
The company said the record date for the planned spin-off of New Communications Holdings Inc., a subsidiary formed as part of the transaction, will be June 7. Read more
FCC Approves Verizon Wireline Assets Sale to Frontier Communications
In a not so surprising move, the FCC has approved the sale of Verizon’s wireline assets in fourteen states to Frontier Communications Corp. today. This acquisition has been discussed in the trade press for some time due to review and approval processes by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the Department of Justice (DOJ) and concerned individual state regulatory agencies. However, final approval rested with the FCC, which has deemed the sale to be worthwhile.
Residential and small-business access lines in Arizona, California, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Washington, Wisconsin and West Virginia will be affected by the sale.
