Who Knew an iPhone Would Do That?
The next time you leave the house, don’t forget your iPhone. It just may save your life!
Now, I’m not talking about how you can call for help, although you can. I’m not even making reference to the GPS features, although that would come in handy too. Christopher Tkacik of Maryland was able to use his iPhone to help a rescue crew on New Year’s Eve after he and his dog became lost.
Naturally, we would assume that Tkacik used the phone to call for help once he realized that he and Boo were lost in the woods northwest of Frederick, Md. He did.
He tried to give the police his coordinates, but the reading on his GPS was incorrect. Read more
First Regional Carrier to Sell Apple iPhone
C Spire Wireless, formerly known as Cellular South, announced on October 19 that it will begin selling the Apple iPhone 4S in the coming weeks.
Based in Ridgeland, Miss., C Spire is the first regional carrier to announce that it will offer the iPhone. The company is the eighth-largest wireless carrier in the United States, with about 1 million customers.
C Spire, which serves customers in Mississippi, southwest Alabama, northwest Florida and western Tennessee, leapfrogs others, including T-Mobile USA, with gaining access to this popular handset. The Deutsche Telekom AG unit has said it would like to offer the iPhone but it is still seeking an agreement with Apple.
C Spire declined to offer details in the press, including when specifically the device will be available for retail sale and if the carrier also will gain access to older iPhone models.

My Lowes
Responding to Home Depot’s provision of Motorola handheld devices to employees, Lowes is set to issue 42,000 Apple iPhones to its retail staff. Bloomberg news reports the provision of about 25 iPhones per store will supplement the introduction of “MyLowes,” an online tool that will enable customers to access everything from user’s manuals to paint formulas. According to reports, Lowes also plans to add WiFi to in-store locations in order to enable customers to use their smartphones.
The handheld battles are not limited to home improvement stores: Read more

Skype Tackles the Mobile Smartphone
Earlier this week at the Mobile World Congress, Verizon Wireless and Skype announced that they joined forces; Verizon’s subscribers will be able to start making calls using Skype on nine selected smartphones in late March.
The two companies have built a new, always-on application called Skype Mobile. The app will enable Verizon smartphone users to make and receive unlimited Skype-to-Skype voice calls and cheap international calls at Skype rates.
To use the Skype client a data plan is needed. However, the calls will be carried over Verizon Wireless’ voice network (as opposed to its 3G data network), switched as voice in the core, and routed via VoIP once they connect to Skype. It’s a creative workaround designed to preserve Verizon’s overall network quality, and its voice revenue as smartphone subscribers cannot utilize the Skype client to make calls to any U.S. PSTN number.
