Apple Unveils iPhone 4, Video Calling and Netflix App

Skype Tackles the Mobile Smartphone

Earlier this week at the Mobile World Congress, Verizon Wireless and Skype announced that they joined forces; Verizon’s subscribers will be able to start making calls using Skype on nine selected smartphones in late March.

The two companies have built a new, always-on application called Skype Mobile. The app will enable Verizon smartphone users to make and receive unlimited Skype-to-Skype voice calls and cheap international calls at Skype rates.

To use the Skype client a data plan is needed. However, the calls will be carried over Verizon Wireless’ voice network (as opposed to its 3G data network), switched as voice in the core, and routed via VoIP once they connect to Skype. It’s a creative workaround designed to preserve Verizon’s overall network quality, and its voice revenue as smartphone subscribers cannot utilize the Skype client to make calls to any U.S. PSTN number. SlingPlayer Mobile Given Thumbs Up By AT&T

You may remember back in May of 2009 that AT&T denied 3G support for Sling Media’s app, stating that “Slingbox, which would use large amounts of wireless network capacity, could create congestion and potentially prevent other customers from using the network.”

Yesterday, AT&T announced that it’s 3G mobile broadband network will support Sling Media, Inc.’s SlingPlayer Mobile™ app in a press release.  Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets stated, “Just as we’ve worked with Sling Media in this instance, we look forward to collaborating with other developers so that mobile customers can access a wider, more bandwidth-sensitive, and powerful range of applications in the future.”

But there’s an interesting twist to the story today: Ars Technica is reporting that Sling did NOT work with AT&T to modify it’s product.   Read more
