Sonic Solutions Delivers Video-on-Demand for Sears, Kmart

Sears and Kmart are preparing to enter the crowded video on demand (VoD) marketplace. Sonic Solutions announced that it will team with the retailers to deliver movies and TV episodes for rent or purchase, including new releases often on the same day as the DVDs become available. The VoD service will be available on Internet-connected devices including TVs, Blu-ray players and mobile phones.

As part of the multi-year agreement, Sears has licensed Sonic Solutions’ RoxioNow platform. Service is expected to launch later this year and be broadly promoted at retail stores nationwide.

Enhanced Sound Coming to Downloads

Yesterday, Sonic Solutions and DTS, Inc., announced that DTS, the multi-channel audio format, would be added to the RoxioNow platform as part of a partnership arrangement. The addition of the highly regarded DTS will allow retail partners Blockbuster and Best Buy to offer 5.1 channel surround sound on independent films, next-day television programs and premium movies. Linking Kiosk and Online Delivery

In a joint press release Sonic Solutions and MOD Systems announced a strategic partnership that will provide retailers with a complete multi-platform system to digitally deliver premium entertainment. The partnership will integrate RoxioNow, the Sonic platform supporting over-the-top Internet entertainment delivery to connected devices, with the MOD System solution supporting “self-service” downloads at digital kiosks.

Anthony Bay, Chairman and CEO of MOD Systems is quoted as saying, “Together with Sonic, we’re taking a major step toward meeting the long-standing vision of the entertainment industry by giving consumers easy access to digital entertainment, whether in-store, on-line, at home, or on-the go, all sold and supported by the retail brands consumers trust.”
