Comcast Sued For Set-Top Box Rentals

In late June, West Virginia Attorney General Darrell McGraw filed a lawsuit against Comcast over the cable operator’s requirement that customers rent set-top boxes in order to watch premium channels.

McGraw’s lawsuit alleges that by tying the premium service to the set-top-box rental, consumers are paying a rate higher than the boxes would cost on the open market, in addition to paying much more than the boxes are actually worth. The lawsuit seeks damages on behalf of consumers, in addition to penalties and statutory damages.

McGraw is not alone in his discontent. Over the past several years, a growing number of lawsuits have surfaced against cable operators for forcing consumers to rent cable boxes, a hidden fee that is not advertised as part of the cost of the premium service. In fact, last month a Mobile, Ala., woman filed a federal lawsuit against Comcast for this very same issue.

No word from the courts yet, or from Comcast on these lawsuits.
