Google Acquires Online Video Startup

Google is acquiring start-up Episodic to bolster its online video presence. The San Francisco-based company offers a platform for streaming live and on-demand video via the Web.

Episodic announced the deal Friday in a blog post, and stated that in joining Google it will continue its work to deliver video to desktops and notebooks, and mobile and IPTV devices.

The company’s platform enables businesses — including content creators, marketers and enterprises — to host, stream, measure and monetize their videos. Monetization is accomplished through advertising and online sales. It’s worth noting that Episodic mentions IPTV. The tech media has hypothesized that Google is developing an IPTV set-top box. If this is true, Episodic’s online video support would provide a nice complement to a service provider’s offerings.

The purchase marks Google’s fifth acquisition so far this year. Terms of the deal weren’t disclosed. Google has said it intends to buy at least one company per month this year as part of its effort to develop more products and import more talented engineers.
