FCC: 21 Million VoIP Users Nationwide
The FCC has released its biannual report on “Local Telephone Competition,” which, for the first time, included comprehensive information about VoIP subscribers. As of year-end 2008, circuit switched POTS was still the dominant form of voice communication.
In total, there were 162 million voice connections at of the end of 2008, with 141 million traditional switched access lines in service, and 21 million VoIP subscriptions serviced by a cable, traditional telco or VoIP provider.Of those 162 total connections: 48% were residential POTS lines, 39% were traditional POTS business lines, 12% were residential VoIP, and 1% were business VoIP subscriptions.
Other highlights: approximately 81% take VoIP service as part of a service bundle. Of these bundled customers, 92% receive their VoIP service via a cable provider, 7% via FTTP, DSL or other wireline service, and less than 1% via fixed wireless or other connections.
It’s important to stress that this information is only current as of year-end 2008, the first year the commission decided to collect data on VoIP connections.
