Verizon Launches FiOS Digital Voice
Late last week, Verizon announced the availability a new VoIP-based service for its residential FiOS customers. FiOS Digital Voice is now available in 11 states, including New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Florida, Texas, Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Pennsylvania, California and Washington, D.C.
FiOS Digital Voice provides 21 calling features. Highlights include:
- Live Voice Mail Screening - This feature gives users the option to hear voice mail messages as they arrive and then decide whether or not to take the incoming call. Verizon notes that this feature is not available from its cable competitors.
- Caller ID on TV - Enables FiOS TV customers to see incoming caller ID information displayed for several seconds in the corner of their TV screen. They can decide to pause their TV programming to answer the call or let it go into their FiOS Digital Voice mailbox. The feature can be turned on or off from the customer’s set-top box.
- Locate Me - Customers can program up to three numbers where they might be reached when not at home, and incoming calls will ring at each of those numbers, one at a time. Unanswered calls are sent to voice mail.
Other FiOS Digital Voice features include Simultaneous Ring, Do Not Disturb, Voice Mail with E-mail Notification and Virtual Numbers.
“FiOS Digital Voice sets the standard in the same way that FiOS TV and Internet have, by offering features that others only hope to offer,” said Eric J. Bruno, vice president for Verizon consumer product management and development. “Subscribers get more free calling features than cable, delivered with the trusted reliability of our advanced all-fiber network, and they get it all from a company with long-standing expertise in delivering superior phone service.”
As you might remember, Verizon discontinued VoiceWing, its first-generation VoIP service, back in March 2009, but has been testing a next-generation VoIP service since late 2008. While the new service is initially available to residential customers, Verizon plans to extend the service to FiOS business customers later this year.
