Verizon Offers FiOS Without the Contract

Verizon is now offering Tampa, Fla., subscribers FiOS TV, Internet and digital voice bundles on a month-to-month basis at the same prices previously available only to customers with two-year contracts, with guaranteed pricing for one year and no early-termination fee.

Although Verizon might expand the program in the future, the Tampa market is the only area where Verizon is offering the same price for month-by-month billing. It’s an area where Verizon has struggled to gain footing against Bright House Networks, the incumbent cable provider.

“Tampa is a very competitive market, and we’ve been told by customers either directly or in focus groups that they know our service is better but a contract has been a barrier for purchasing FiOS,” Verizon spokeswoman Heather Wilner told Multichannel News.

It’s an interesting strategy and comment on the importance of no-contract pricing. Verizon’s FTTH service is clearly fast, but in certain markets speed may not be enough to attract a hearty subscriber base. Verizon is listening to how its customers want to pay for its services as well.

The no-contract offering will cost $99.99 per month for FiOS TV Prime HD, FiOS Internet 15/5 Mbps and FiOS Digital Voice.

Verizon has previously offered month-to-month bundles, although for $20 to $30 higher per month than bundles with the two-year contract.
