NetAmerica Alliance Member Goes Live

Peoples Telephone Cooperative of Quitman, Texas, has begun offering 4G LTE data service in rural Texas. Peoples Telephone has been a member of the NetAmerica Alliance since 2010.  NetAmerica is an alliance of independent carriers who have joined forces to build out 4G LTE service in the carriers’ licensed coverage areas. In a press release, NetAmerica describes the new service as a milestone in its development and member enhancement, emphasizing the joint mission of the NetAmerica independent carrier alliance as key to “empowering the delivery of lifestyle and livelihood-enhancing 4G LTE solutions.”

The new service replaces a fixed wireless WiMax service and runs over Peoples’ 700MHz licensed service. Peoples Telephone Cooperative is using the NetAmerica Alliance UniPort Home Gateway that provides both wired Ethernet and Wi-Fi within the subscriber home, via the new enhanced 4G LTE network. Customer premise equipment like the UniPort Gateway is possible because of technology partnerships between NetAmerica and companies such as Ericsson.

At launch, Peoples Telephone Cooperative was able to move 200 residential customers from the WiMax service to the improved 4G LTE service. “We needed to move from WiMax to 4G LTE in order to improve our service offering and to give us a path to the future,” said Steven Steele, assistant general manager at Peoples Telephone Cooperative.
