Time Warner Cable Launches Mobile WiMAX
Time Warner Cable announced that it will launch a mobile WiMAX service in Charlotte, Greensboro and Raleigh, N.C. on December 1. The company also plans to debut the service in Dallas and parts of Hawaii in the coming weeks.
Time Warner Cable will leverage its investment in Clearwire’s WiMAX network, but market the service offering under a white label, its own Road Runner Mobile brand.
Customers using the Time Warner Cable 4G Mobile Network can expect Internet speeds up to 6 Mbps, according to the company. There are a few service tiers available:
- Road Runner Mobile 4G National Elite: gives customers unlimited access to both Time Warner Cable`s 4G Mobile Network and Sprint’s 3G EVDO network for $79.95 if you’re a Roadrunner Standard or Turbo customers.
- Road Runner Mobile 4G Elite: gives customers unlimited access to the Time Warner Cable 4G Mobile Network for $49.95 if you’re already a Roadrunner Standard or Turbo customer.
- Road Runner Mobile 4G Choice: gives customers access to the Time Warner Cable 4G Mobile Network for $39.95 if you’re already bundling at least two Time Warner Cable services. The tier also caps usage at 2 Gbps per month.
Time Warner Cable customers who subscribe to a bundle of services also will have access to preferred pricing on the Elite levels of service.
Time Warner Cable plans to launch additional mobile services to customers in the future such as the ability to program a DVR from a mobile device and the ability to take their video content with them on the go.
Of note, three MSOs initially invested in the Clearwire WiMAX network: Comcast, Bright House Networks and TWC. Comcast is already offering WiMAX services through its “High-Speed 2go” brand in Atlanta and Portland, and the company plans to launch the service in its Dallas, Chicago and Philadelphia markets soon. With TWC’s announcement, Bright House Networks is now the only MSO that has not announced a WiMAX service offering.
