Verizon Trials LTE Running at 8.5 Mbps

Verizon is marching full-steam ahead with its LTE plans.

In a YouTube video released last week (see it after the jump), Verizon is showcasing the technology to users who are accustomed to older and slower wireless connectivity. Speedtests in the video (on a completely uncongested network) show users achieving downstream speeds of up to 8.5 Mbps, and upstream speeds of up to 2.8 Mbps. This is consistent with Verizon’s promise to deliver between 5 and 12 Mbps downstream.

The service provider has pledged to rollout LTE in 25- 30 markets before yearend. As we reported back in September, Verizon plans to light up the network all at once as opposed to be slow market-by-market rollout. The company plans to have the service available for some 100 million points of presence (POPs) in 2010, and continue to deploy the network over the next two to three years.

No news yet on when the initial launch is planned, or what the service will cost.
