NTCA Smart Grid Resource Center

Welcome to the NTCA Smart Grid Resource Center. This site provides articles, videos, research and links to additional information about Smart Grid and how it will impact our industry and our customers.

NTCA has been working with National Information Solutions Cooperative (NISC) and other key rural organizations, including the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA), and the National Rural Telecommunications Cooperative (NRTC), who, like NTCA, seek to inform rural cooperative and commercial companies about the Smart Grid and its technical needs.

What is the
Smart Grid?

An intelligent electrical grid, commonly known as a smart gird, unites broadband and IP networking with the existing electrical grid. The smart grid was first introduced more than 10 years ago, but because of recent federal interest and investment, the concept has now moved from pilot projects to full scale deployments.

One Telco
Leading
the Way

Central Indiana Power (CIP) and Hancock Telecom recently merged to form 9 Star Connect, a single cooperative which will provide both electric and broadband services to its members.

This partnership sets a precedent for how regional telecommunications and electric cooperatives can work together to provide rural customers with broadband connectivity and advanced energy management capabilities.
