Job Description

Central Office Technician
Overview:
• Work inside a central office (CO) to install/remove and maintain the complex switching and routing equipment used in voice, video, fiber optics and data telecommunications networks.
• Will be part of a Team that designs and implements hardware/software requirements to meet the growing needs of the NNTC data network.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• install, maintain, test and repair complex switching, circuit, network and data/digital equipment
• may work on data/digital or CPE equipment
• survey and analyze alarms, test lines and trunks
• may work on cell, circuit, radio and network terminal equipment
• schedule and perform software back-ups and updates
• remove or replace connections on wire distributing frames
• perform turnup, acceptance, installation and provisioning of circuits
• Provide advanced support to Technicians in the field.
• maintain batteries, rectifiers and fuse alarms in central office power plants
• place, test and splice fiber optic cable
• Develop positive working relationship with co-workers.
• Perform inspection and maintenance activities on regular basis.
• Maintain documentations for all installations, maintenances, repairs and inspections.
• Comply with health, safety and environmental policies.
• Remove any unused or non-functional equipment
• Interface with Team for Network Planning and vendors to recommend and evaluate new technologies
• Maintain a positive attitude, and project a high level of professionalism on behalf of NNTC to the customer
• Maintain a clean and efficient work area, lab and data center

Qualifications:
• interpret work schematics, circuit drawings and engineering specs
• good oral communication skills
• operate a laptop with MS Office programs
• operate equipment for testing and repair
• high-level understanding of telephony and electricity
• data systems (IP, LAN/WAN, optical, ethernet)
• DWDM timing and synchronization
• switching and routing
• IP addressing & routing
• advanced networking (VPN, ATM, SDH, MPLS, Wireless, SS7, SONET)
• Ability to analyze the performance of switching and peripheral data systems and initiate corrective action.
• MetaSwitch or equivalent experience
• Working knowledge of GPON and IPTV technologies
• Familiarity with network cabling (fiber, copper, installation standards, test & turn up)
• Understanding of Brocade, Ciena/Cyan, Calix.
• General understanding of operating systems such as Linux, Windows Server.
• Experience and/or training in Fiber Optic transmissions systems, installation, maintenance and troubleshooting

Education and/or Experience:
• Three years of current experience in a central office, related telephony field, or the equivalent in training and experience.
• Ability to work independently with little or no supervision
• Ability to complete work in a timely manner to keep customer service commitment times.
• Work inside an open office environment at a computer terminal for extended periods of time.
• May be required to run cables for various equipment, IO ports, on systems.
• Contacting customers, external and/or internal may be required.
• Adapt in changes in the business to include advances in technology, new skills and new procedures.
• Must be able to climb various types of ladders, sit, bend, stoop, stand, and walk, occasionally over uneven terrain, for extended periods.
• Travel within the region and/or throughout the country could be required
• Must maintain a valid driver’s license with a safe driving record
• Must pass an extensive background check and/or drug screening tests

• Ability to accept call-outs/standby, rotation nights, weekends and holidays as needed.
• After hour time will be needed occasionally to perform upgrades and maintenance work during our maintenance window.
• Function as a team player with ability and willingness to train on the job with unfamiliar or new equipment as needed.
• Ability to achieve required certifications and to successfully complete and required training or coursework.

Advanced Education and/or Experience
• Education: AA Degree in Telecommunications/Electronics or related field and/or equivalent experience.
• Five plus years recent experience in field as a Central Office technician.
• Formal technical training on central office, transmission and/or peripheral equipment.
• Equipment certifications/licensing/experience in: (RoadM, Fujitsu, Calix, Pair Gain, Multiplexers, MOE, DWDM, Fiber Optics, etc.)
