Pandemic Resources for Rural Broadband Providers

These are certainly challenging times as our entire country (actually, our entire world) has hunkered down as we watch this unprecedented epidemic of COVID 19 sweep across the globe. Even as we have all struggled to figure out how to keep our staffs, our colleagues and our families safe during these unsettled times, at NTCA we have also really focused on the resources that will be useful to our member companies across the country as they also look to maintain their critical operations – even more critical today given our dependency on remote work and education and even healthcare for millions of Americans.

To that end, NTCA has created a special section of our website that is devoted to resources that might be helpful to rural broadband providers across the country – and a site that is updated regularly. From business tips to health care updates to the Pandemic Influenza Guide for an Emergency from DHS and even examples of table top exercises in case of a Pandemic.

RDOF Is Too Critical For a Dice Roll

The last time the FCC held a reverse auction to distribute critical universal service funds for rural broadband deployment, satellite provider Viasat was among the auction winners. And won big. The company won about $122 million over 10 years in the Connect America Fund Phase II auction to deploy broadband service to unserved portions in 20 states.  The jury is still out on how they actually accomplished these goals.

The FCC proposes to allow satellite companies to participate in these auctions again as they prepare for the Rural Digital Opportunity Fund (RDOF) Phase I auction later this fall. This time, along with Viasat, the auction could include some of the new crew of (NGSO) satellite technologies, such as SpaceX who have yet to be tested in a commercial space for the standards they are saying they can meet while touting their potential economic advantage in a large bidding area.

Honoring Industry Leaders

There is no better way to wrap up a terrific RTIME meeting than by celebrating those in the rural broadband industry who have always gone above and beyond in the work they do for the companies they work for and the customers they serve. Frankly, it’s my very favorite time at the podium!

Today was special with a number of folks who have put their heart and soul into service who we were able to recognize our last morning…bright and early with a full room. I love the energy that now surrounds our Excellence Awards program and a deep appreciation to the NTCA Awards Committee for their volunteer efforts in selecting those to recognize.
