VOTW: Verizon to Launch Home Monitoring Service

And last but not least, our video of the week (VOTW). At CES 2011 back in January of this year, Verizon first revealed its new Home Monitoring and Control service. It will allow customers to automate their home’s thermostat, locks, lights and appliances, as well as monitor live video from any portion of the home from a computer, smartphone or FiOS-connected TV.

Verizon officially demoed the service last week at the FTTH Conference & Expo. The telco plans to launch the service October 11. According to published reports, the service will be priced at $9.95 per month, plus the cost of Z-Wave wireless hardware. Initially, it will only be available to Verizon’s DSL and FTTH subscribers, but it will ultimately be sold on its own and could be a linchpin service in Verizon’s larger connected home strategy.
