Bridging Other Digital Divides
The public school system is often the financial “haves” vs the “have-nots.” In our corner of southeast Illinois, our rural schools don’t have the resources that schools in metropolitan communities enjoy. When the realization set in that high school esports programs were going to be a real thing, I wanted to get a handle on what kind of gear schools were using to see if there was a way I could help a “have-not” compete with the “haves”.

Citizens Celebrates 100% Fiber in Virginia’s Blue Ridge
One of the first areas explored by Virginia colonists, Floyd County, Va., has a rich history of welcoming settlers to what many call “our beautiful mountain” nestled in the Blue Ridge. Today, the county’s population continues to grow, thanks to robust farming opportunities and advanced communications services supporting home-based business and Main Street.
Behind much of this growth is Citizens Telephone Cooperative (Floyd, Va.), which has been leading Floyd County down the broadband road for quite some time as the area’s beloved hometown communications provider for 110 years. At a celebration of the completion of its fiber build that brought high-speed internet to 100% of Floyd County in just six years, community members lauded the coop’s dedication to its customers and the community at large, supporting remote work, medical monitoring, music studios, jewelry suppliers, pet food companies and more.

Highlighting the Benefits of Telehealth from Within
As telehealth use continues to grow nationwide, one NTCA member is showcasing – and experiencing – the benefits of the technology every day.
Julie Bergman, senior business development specialist at Rainbow Communications (Everest, Kan.), knows firsthand how important telehealth and telehealth advocacy can be for community members. Her godmother, Cindy, was diagnosed with Raynaud disease, Scleroderma and Pulmonary Hypertension.
Typical visits for Cindy’s conditions take her to the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) in Kansas City, Kan., a two-and-a-half-hour drive from her hometown of Seneca, Kan. Telehealth visits have alleviated stress from her husband and family taking time off work to commute to and from doctor appointments.

With this heavy focus on funding and rural communities, the gathering was an ideal opportunity to exchange ideas with others. There were also breakout sessions on telehealth, smart agriculture, economic development, esports and so much more.
Here are some conference takeaways from a few of the many conference moderators.

Line Worker at Scott County Telephone Inspiring Other Women to ‘Hang with Them’
Abbey Middleton, one of the first female line workers among NTCA member companies, never expected to be a line worker for the Scott County Telephone Cooperative (SCTC) (Gate City, Va.).
She wanted to join the Virginia State Police, but the agency requires applicants to be at least 21 years old. To spend the time until she was eligible to enroll as a trooper, Abbey talked to some people she knew and started taking classes as part of the Mountain Empire Community College (MECC) Power Lineman Program. “I didn’t know anything about it,” she said. “I like being outside. I like helping people.” Admittedly, though, she “was flying blind.”
