Paul Bunyan Communications (Bemidji, Minn.) is helping power a new era of student engagement and innovation through its partnership with Bemidji State University (BSU) and Northwest Technical College on the GigaZone Esports Lounge, a state-of-the-art facility designed to support competitive gaming, collaboration and hands-on learning.
Located on the BSU campus, the GigaZone Esports Lounge features a PC gaming center, a podcast studio, a console gaming room and a live broadcasting booth, serving as the home for a new esports program that will launch as a club sport in 2026 for both institutions.
As the primary partner on the project, Paul Bunyan Communications provided financial support, technical expertise, networking equipment and a dedicated six-gig fiber connection to ensure the facility delivers fast, reliable connectivity. The lounge also showcases the capabilities of the cooperative’s GigaZone all-fiber network, which serves more than 6,000 square miles of northern Minnesota.
The esports program is designed to deliver value well beyond competition by exposing students to career pathways in IT, cybersecurity, broadcasting, digital media, marketing and event production while building skills such as teamwork, problem-solving and strategic thinking. The program also supports student engagement, workforce development and regional economic growth by helping retain talent locally and positioning the Bemidji area as future-focused and tech-forward.
Through investments like the GigaZone Esports Lounge, Paul Bunyan Communications continues to demonstrate its commitment to community growth, education and innovation, using advanced broadband to create opportunities that benefit students and the broader region alike.
