Member Moments: Encouraging Reading Outside the Classroom

While TDS Telecom (Madison, Wis.) focuses on connecting more than 280,000 customers to high-speed internet, it does not stop there when it comes to taking care of the community.

TDS partners with the University of Wisconsin Athletic Department to present the Book it with Bucky program, named after the school’s mascot Bucky Badger, to promote reading outside of the classroom for children. Students can earn various prizes, including tickets to University of Wisconsin sporting events, for every 30 minutes they read.

“Book It with Bucky is a fantastic program to get kids fired up about reading and encourage some family fun when they all come to the game,” said Melissa Kellor, TDS communications manager. “They are so proud to come to the tables, show off their pledge sheets and get a new book and prizes.”

The Book it with Bucky program is one of many philanthropic and community-supporting events that TDS supports.

“Giving back in the communities we serve is one of TDS’ core values,” Kellor said. “We give full-time associates time off to volunteer every quarter, sponsor community festivals, support local non-profits, celebrate unsung heroes in the areas we serve, and so much more. We truly pride ourselves in becoming an integral part of every community we call home.”
