Field Operations Manager

Position Summary

The Field Operations Manager oversees the implementation, operation, and maintenance of all field operations and related telecommunications plant. This role leads Field Technicians and Dispatchers, ensuring efficient workflows, high-quality service delivery, and alignment with company objectives. The position collaborates across departments to maximize operational performance and customer satisfaction.

This is a full-time exempt position. Typical work weeks average 40 hours but may exceed as needed, availability for after-hours and weekend work may be required to meet operational demands.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage daily activities of Field Operations Lead, Technicians and Dispatchers
  • Develop and implement operational standards, procedures, and contingency plans
  • Oversee Field Operations including construction, maintenance, and removal of fiber and premise equipment
  • Ensure efficient scheduling, workflow and coordination across departments
  • Promote a safe work environment and enforce safety standards
  • Develop fiber upgrade plans and departmental budgets
  • Obtain permits and easements for construction projects
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and ensure adequate material levels
  • Oversee accuracy of system records, routes, and mapping updates
  • Monitor project costs and ensure completion within budget guidelines
  • Participate in strategic planning and budgeting meetings
  • Evaluate service installation requests and provide cost estimates
  • Ensure preventative maintenance of facilities, equipment, and vehicles
  • Coordinate timely response to outages and cable damage incidents
  • Maintain buildings and grounds in a clean and orderly condition
  • Research and recommend equipment purchases
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and performance management for staff
  • Conduct employee evaluations and support training and development
  • Approve timesheets and manage scheduling to ensure proper coverage
  • Support departmental staffing and organizational planning
  • Work closely with the management team on cross-functional projects
  • Maintain professional relationships with contractors, engineers, vendors, other consultants and community stakeholders
  • Work closely with city, county and economic development officials
  • Communicate with customers and local officials regarding service issues
  • Represent the company professionally in all interactions
  • Strong presence within the community
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the CEO/General Manager

Qualifications 

  • Associate degree in Business, Telecommunications, Electronics, or related field OR 3–5 years of relevant telecommunications or field operations experience 
  • Preferred experience in plant operations and project management with knowledge of purchasing and inventory control. Experience with GIS, CAD, or electronic mapping systems preferred. 
  • Must have valid driver’s license and ability to maintain insurability.

Knowledge & Skills 

  • Strong understanding of voice, video, and broadband technologies
  • Familiarity with RUS construction standards and FCC regulations
  • Proven leadership and supervisory experience preferred
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and make independent decisions
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze technical issues and implement solutions
  • Proficiency in interpreting reports, technical documents, and operational data
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and innovation

Physical Requirements & Work Environment 

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, and full use hands for tools and equipment
  • Frequent bending, kneeling, crouching, and occasional climbing
  • May require occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds
  • Requires close, distance, and depth vision with ability to adjust focus
  • Work environment includes office and field settings with moderate noise levels, and varying weather conditions
