Revolutionizing Rural Healthcare: Telehealth and Extended Reality

Federal resources report approximately 13.8% of the U.S. population resides in rural areas, while 66% of healthcare provider shortage areas are located in rural regions. Innovative solutions are desperately needed, and locally operated rural ISPs with robust fiber broadband connections are ready to help  transform rural healthcare delivery.

Rural communities face numerous obstacles in accessing healthcare:

  • Provider shortages
  • Higher poverty rates
  • Lack of health insurance
  • Reluctance of residents to miss work for medical appointments
  •  Childcare challenges, and
  • Long travel distances to healthcare facilities

These factors contribute to poorer health outcomes and decreased quality of life for rural residents. However, emerging technologies offer promising solutions.

Enter Telehealth and Extended Reality

Telehealth has already proven its worth, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. But the future of better rural healthcare lies in the integration of extended reality (XR) technologies with telehealth services. XR encompasses virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and immersive mixed reality (IMR), offering unprecedented opportunities for remote healthcare delivery.

XR allows for more immersive and effective remote consultations compared to traditional video calls. A University of North Dakota report supports the view that the creation of shared virtual environments can foster stronger relationships between patients and providers. And XR enables providers to tailor virtual settings to each patient's needs, creating optimal conditions for therapy and treatment, all while connecting rural patients to geographically distant specialists in     immersive, interactive environments.

XR is already making waves. VR-based rehabilitation programs have shown improved physical performance outcomes, offering hope for patients with limited access to in-person therapy; the U.S. Veterans Administration has a team dedicated to immersive VR healthcare. Virtual activities of daily living (ADL) protocols help post-stroke patients practice essential skills in a safe, controlled environment, while XR provides accessible, engaging platforms for long-term exercise and behavioral change programs. Immersive environments can also be used for exposure therapy and other mental health interventions.

As key stakeholders in rural communities, locally operated ISPs and healthcare providers have a crucial role to play in this healthcare revolution. Rural broadband providers are leading the way in robust broadband infrastructure investments that support high-quality XR experiences. They are positioned to help local healthcare providers embrace XR and support tech training for healthcare professionals on using XR technologies effectively. Additionally, rural ISPs and their local healthcare systems can work together to educate rural residents about the benefits of XR-enhanced telehealth and how to access these services. These collaborative efforts can also include local academic institutions and government agencies.

While XR technology is not without its challenges – such as potential issues with depth perception and timing in virtual environments – its potential to transform rural healthcare is immense. By embracing these innovative technologies, rural ISPs and health care providers can work together to overcome the longstanding challenges of rural healthcare delivery, creating a healthier, more connected future for rural America.
