Telecommunications Central Office Network Engineer

General Summary

Sandhill Telephone Cooperative is a thriving, technologically advanced telecommunications provider serving residential and business members with an array of services that include local phone, VOIP, high-speed broadband, streaming services, and home automation/security systems. We are looking for a Telecommunications Central Office Network Engineer who will be responsible for installing, operating, and maintaining central office equipment, video headend, and circuits while building positive relationships with preferred vendors. 

Essential Duties and Functions

  • Installs and maintains central office equipment to include any power, fiber cabinets, Calix, Cisco routers, switches, and transport equipment, as well as building bays and cable racks. 
  • Inspects and services central office equipment (batteries, fan filters, etc.)
  • Plans installations by studying orders, plans, manuals, and technical specifications; ordering and gathering equipment, supplies, materials, and tools 
  • Designs and maintains circuits
  • Assesses installation site and prepares installation diagram 
  • Installs and maintains video headend
  • Leads efforts to support innovative services such as Stream TV
  • Designs and maintains central office equipment including any AC or DC power plant
  • Builds and fosters a positive relationship with vendors and ensures that all warranties are updated in a timely manner
  • Removes equipment from decommissioned sites 

Education & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science is preferred.
  • Experience & Skills: 5+ years of experience in related central office equipment. Prior experience with video headend equipment and circuits required. Familiarity with CISCO routers, switches, and transport equipment required. Prior experience with electrical wiring desired. Good communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills are essential.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Physical Demands: This position requires lifting up to 75lbs and frequent prolonged periods of bending, pulling, twisting, reaching, climbing, and standing. Must be able to sit behind a desk for long periods of time. 
  • Work Environment: While performing the duties of this position, the employee will be exposed to various climates and conditions. Wearing safety clothing and equipment may at times be required. Must be available for on-call situations and work irregular hours as needed. Must be able to work in a self-paced and self-motivated environment. 

Additional Information

Must be willing to work in an in-office environment at our Jefferson, SC location, and other surrounding offices in our footprint. Remote work can be completed on a limited basis. Position requires field work and hands-on maintenance in central offices within our territory. An insurable driving record, preliminary drug screening and background check are all required.
