Broadband Training for a Connected World

Over the past several years, the federal government has dedicated substantial resources to improving broadband access throughout the United States. These measures, alongside increasing demand for broadband capabilities nationwide, have created a surge in demand for a skilled broadband workforce. In response to these needs, Northwood Technical College (Northwood Tech) worked with NTCA to create the Broadband Academy, a flexible, self-paced online training program for those looking to start or advance their careers in a broadband skills badging program.

Northwood Tech has been preparing students for careers in telecommunications since establishing its first telecom program in 1973. The Broadband Academy provides industry-recognized credentials that fit into each student’s schedule, equipping future (and current) broadband workers with the knowledge needed to succeed in this fast-growing sector. The Broadband Academy was recognized by the White House as part of the 2022 Talent Pipeline Challenge for its impact on workforce development.

Recognizing the need to meet students from across the country, as well as workers balancing current employment and/or family needs, the Broadband Academy is 100% online and available 24/7; “office hours” with instructors are also available. Online coursework is paired with on-the-job apprenticeship-type training at NTCA member companies. Employees and employers can choose the degree of training that best fits their goals:

  • Level 1 – Broadband Customer Service Specialist: Covers the technical skills needed for customer support roles. (Digital Badge upon successful completion.)
  • Level 2 – Broadband Installer: Provides foundational knowledge for broadband technicians. (Digital Badge upon successful completion.)
  • IT Courses – Network Specialist: Builds advanced skills in IT tools, systems and concepts, with a focus on Cisco 1-3, information security and wireless networking.

Northwood Tech is committed to making training accessible, flexible and relevant to the broadband industry, and the Broadband Academy is structured to help students gain knowledge and skills to thrive in this fast-growing field.

Students have shared their positive experiences in the program:

“I enjoyed exploring all aspects of fiber optics, but I especially loved learning about the evolution of fiber optics networks. I learned that fiber optics plays a crucial role in broadband internet connection, linking networks and data centers and acting as the main part of the internet.” — Christina Amay-Kluver, ColtonTel (Colton, Ore.).

“This class has given me a lot of information about how everything works and runs in the background. Very interesting and informative! It is a lot more than running orders inside the office and gives me a great perspective of what the outside techs do! Very beneficial class!” — Elizabeth Stephenson, DRN (Ellendale, N.D.).

“After this class, I have a better understanding of the operations of copper work. My company is mainly fiber, but we do have a couple of customers on copper. I feel like this has been really helpful since I have never done anything like this before. Overall, a great class for someone who is just getting into the business and not sure what things mean and is eager to learn.” — Cyrus Hickman, BevComm Inc. (Blue Earth, Minn.).

“I really enjoyed the self-paced structure. It’s easier for me to look at the material in a way that works best for me. I learned that fiber optics plays a crucial role in broadband internet connection, linking networks and data centers and acting as the main part of the internet. It was great!” — Miriam Guel, South Slope Cooperative Communications (North Liberty, Iowa).
