Our world today is undeniably loud. Each day brings new noise: politics, social media outbursts, endless opinions, baskets of drama and mounting demands on our attention. Our industry mirrors this constant clamor with frequent updates, changes and the ongoing issues with the Universal Service Fund and Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment Program that demand focus.
The noise isn’t limited to the professional world. It is not only employee concerns or industry shifts. It is also the ever-present challenge of balancing home and work lives, which adds layers of mental strain. Spending time with kids and serving on various boards and committees can further amplify this overwhelming soundscape. Always asking yourself, “Did I get it all done?” “What did I forget?” All these pressures combined make the need for peace and mental clarity a must.
Over the past several months, I have realized the importance of silencing this noise before it overwhelms me. Drown it out before it drowns me. To function effectively and prevent burnout, I had to find strategies to quiet my mind and foster clarity.
Yoga has become one of my go-to practices for grounding myself. A good book or an evening walk also helps calm my mind, refresh my body and nourish my soul. Establishing boundaries with family and friends has allowed me to focus on the positive aspects of life while distancing myself from the relentless stream of world events and daily demands.
Additionally, I’ve made intentional changes to how I consume information. By selecting credible, unbiased sources and eliminating unnecessary newsfeeds and newsletters, I have reduced the noise and maintained better control over my mental space.
Spending time with a friend for lighthearted conversation and laughter has also proven invaluable. Laughter uplifts the spirit and realigns the mind, easing the mental weight we often carry.
My daughter recently spoke at her former high school regarding struggles with mental health. She spoke in front of 150 kids, and I am in awe of her insight and thoughtfulness about small things we can do like caring for people and showing them kindness. One kind word can drown out noise. One thoughtful gesture can be a light that someone else so desperately needs. Unknowingly, it also causes an inner peace for you and your mind.
In a world that grows louder each day, finding moments of peace and balance is crucial. By intentionally seeking calm and connection, we can reclaim our mental clarity and thrive amidst the noise.
