How Operation IFAST Is Turning Internet Access into a Tool for Good

The internet is one of the most powerful tools of our time. It connects us, informs us, and empowers our daily lives. As Internet service providers (ISPs), what we provide to our communities and intend for good is tragically also being used to exploit the vulnerable. Seventy-five percent of underage sex trafficking victims report being sold online.

As ISPs we are uniquely positioned to make a difference.

That’s where Operation IFAST comes in.

What Is Operation IFAST?
Operation IFAST (ISPs Fight Against Sex Trafficking) is a nationwide initiative led by Guardian Group, a nonprofit organization that helps law enforcement identify and recover victims of sex trafficking across the U.S.

The program is proudly supported by NTCA–The Rural Broadband Association, which represents about 850 community-based broadband providers across the country. NTCA’s backing has been instrumental in expanding Operation IFAST, empowering ISPs in rural and local communities to lead the fight against this hidden crime.

Why It Matters
Traffickers just need a vulnerable child and an internet connection to be successful. This is not just an overseas problem or something that only happens in large cities. It’s happening in every state, including small towns and rural communities and it’s often facilitated online.

ISPs play a key role in this issue, whether they realize it or not. When technicians are invited into homes and businesses, they become uniquely situated to recognize indicators of trafficking and to report what they see to the local authorities.

What Participation Looks Like
Any company can participate in Operation IFAST by committing to three simple things:

  1. Train your staff to recognize signs of trafficking
  2. Connect local law enforcement with Guardian Group’s free investigative support
  3. Raise awareness and support for Guardian Group’s mission

It’s not about monitoring customers or policing the web. It’s about equipping teams to recognize red flags in the communities they already serve and providing tools to support those on the front lines.
