As summer fades and fall begins, many of us feel the shift at home, at work and within ourselves. Maybe it’s the return of structure after a season of activity, or the natural rhythm of chapters closing and new ones beginning. For me, it’s both a bittersweet farewell to long evenings on the lake and a welcome pull toward a more reflective harvest season on our farm. These moments remind me how transitions invite us to pause and consider how we’re showing up.
The summer months brimmed with community events and full calendars. While those connections (sunset conversations, laughter around a fire or time in the sun on the boat) are deeply grounding, they can also leave us stretched thin. As new routines are set and work schedules continue to level up, stress and burnout can quietly creep in. Around here, I’ve noticed the impact of creative tension and collaborative friction lately. Perhaps just signs of a fast pace carried too long, coupled with a deep sense of responsibility for what we do.
In those moments, presence matters. Marcus Aurelius wrote, “You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.” His words remind me that while I can’t control deadlines, shifting schedules, or even the changing seasons, I can choose how I respond. The energy we bring into a room sets the tone for our colleagues, our teams and ourselves.
That is why giving ourselves space to reset is not indulgence, it is responsibility. How we respond to pressure, and how we show up for others in their own moments of stress, shape trust and relationships. Empathy, patience and gratitude are not soft skills; they are leadership essentials that allow people to thrive.
Seasonal transitions carry a kind of quiet magic. They ask us to notice what has passed, reflect on what we have learned and be intentional about where we are going. What small course corrections could help us lead with more steadiness, kindness or vision? And who around us might need that same grace offered to them?
As leaders and colleagues in this industry and beyond, how we show up matters. Please let us step into this next season with clarity, compassion and intention.
