NTCA GHP Provides Virtual Behavioral Health Support Services

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, millions of Americans have suffered hardships and stress. Some have lost their jobs while others are working from home and balancing additional responsibilities for children and family members. As restrictions continue, many people miss the normalcy of social gatherings and other activities outside their homes.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), U.S. adults report considerably elevated adverse mental health conditions, increased substance abuse and suicidal thoughts associated with the stresses of COVID-19. A recent national survey indicates some grim statistics to support the CDC report, with 55% of respondents reporting an increase in past-month alcohol consumption, with 18% reporting a significant increase, and 36% reporting an increase in illicit drug use since the pandemic began. When survey participants were asked what prompted their use of substances, reasons include trying to cope with increased stress, anxiety or depression and to relieve boredom.

Unfortunately, using alcohol or drugs to cope with pressures can become a habit and lead to substance use disorder. It is more important than ever to provide resources to help those who are struggling with substance abuse or their mental health. NTCA GHP has virtual support services, and we encourage members to share information about these resources so your employees can seek help if it is needed.
