Telling the Smart Rural Community Story…

My heart always skips an extra beat when a reporter calls…never quite sure what their motivation or angle might be but I’m always anxious to tell the story of NTCA members and the services they provide to their communities. But I had such a energetic discussion with writer Sue Halpern, writer for The New Yorker (including her phone cutting off in the middle of her discussion from her relatively rural home in Vermont with her Price Cap carrier provider struggling to even provide voice service…never mind broadband services) that I was delighted when she expressed an interest in hitting the road and seeing rural America and rural community-based broadband providers in action!

So Much To Be Grateful For…

Holiday season means wonderful chaos, family, food, doggies, leftovers and walks through the autumn leaves…and we had that in spades this weekend as Leah and her friend Brett drove from Chicago with Sawyer (another golden pup) to spend the week with Don and I. Given that Brett has never been to Washington DC, the two of them spent a great deal of time seeing every museum and every site special to our nation’s capital….I would get tired just hearing their daily routine over the course of the past week and tried to keep up with them for some of the touring but was quickly left in the dust. I always do enjoy seeing the city again through the eyes of those seeing these locations for the first time and enjoy its splendor all over again.

This time of year is also cause for reflection as we start to think about the year that has passed and what is coming in the days ahead. It has been a year of great opportunity for NTCA and our membership…

USDA’s New Broadband Program Bringing Service to Rural America

NTCA was very excited to support USDA’s new ReConnect grant, grant and loan program when it was voted into existence by Congress and implemented by the team at RUS. However, I’m not going to lie, when the first grants out of the box were distributed to an electric utility and municipality, I became a tad concerned that the RLECs were going to be cut out of the process given that they have been doing the job already of building networks in their areas for years and aren’t the “shiny new toys” in the mix.

But my concerns have been put to rest with the recent spate of great news coming from USDA.
