Securing Devices At Home and Work

During this pandemic, our homes and businesses are more connected than ever. Every individual has the responsibility to play an active role in securing devices. This is extremely important because these devices keep your information protected. To assist you and your employees in taking the first steps to securing devices at home and work, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has provided two one-page tip sheets that highlight ways to be secure at home and work.

CISA’s one-page tips sheets including the following:

5 Steps to Protecting the Digital Home

  1. Secure the Wi-Fi Network by changing the factory-set default password and username.
  2. Double the login protection by enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA) to ensure that the authorized individuals have access to accounts.
  3. Devices must be protected with updates to the latest security software, web browser, and operating systems.
  4. Keep tabs on apps by checking app permissions and use the “rule of least privilege” to delete what is not needed or used.
  5. Limit what information posted on social media.

5 Ways to Be Cyber Secure at Work

  1. Treat business information as personal information by not sharing personally identifiable information (PII) with unknown parties or over unsecured networks.
  2. Don’t make passwords easy to guess.
  3. Be up to date by keeping software updated to the latest version available.
  4. Social media is part of the fraud toolset so avoid oversharing on social media.
  5. It only takes one time for a data breach to happen so be aware of unusual sources.

While these are the first steps to securing devices, it should be something done on a regular basis. Do not let time be the determinate factor. Take full responsibility to be cyber smart by securing devices at home and work. To learn more about these tips and others, visit the CISA website.
