Smart Rural Community Spotlight: Green Hills

Nearly 70 years ago, a small group of citizens met in a church basement in Breckenridge, Missouri, to discuss bringing dial-tone phone service to their rural community. Seven decades later, a large part of that community is served by a gigabit fiber broadband network, and more than one million dollars each year is invested to upgrade remaining copper plant to fiber. Green Hills Telephone Corporation d/b/a Green Hills Communications is delivering the future of broadband with the community commitment that is woven into its history.

Green Hills serves an area whose geography can be challenging to broadband deployment. Accordingly, Green Hills blends fiber, copper, fixed wireless and, where customers cannot be reached with those platforms, satellite to support critical broadband capabilities.

Green Hill broadband supports Skill Path, a 6,000 sq. ft. facility that provides online video training. These services include virtual seminars, workforce building and e-learning. Green Hills fiber enables this site to connect seamlessly with corporate headquarters in Kansas City.

Green Hills also supports smart agriculture. A special fiber build connects a Union Pacific railway loading point that is accessible to farmers in North Central Missouri and Southern Iowa. Corn and grain are moved, stored and delivered with advanced broadband-enabled logistics. Automated scanning and weighing systems allow an average load to be delivered in less than 10 minutes, and the connected facility can load nearly 400,000 bushels into a 110-railcar train in less than eight hours.

Green Hills incorporates its forward-looking approach to its internal culture, as well. Employees regularly share presentations with each other regularly on technology, sales, and customer experience. This program, which recognizes the ever-present need to identify and meet evolving market needs, is characteristics of this rural broadband company that is not simply a service provider, but rather a “solutions provider.”
