Smart Rural Community Spotlight: GRM

The hallmark of a Smart Rural Community is collaboration. Oftentimes, it also includes hefty dose of ingenuity.

GRM Networks serves 27,000 customers across a 4,500 square miles radius. It uses a variety of technology platforms to deliver broadband speeds up to a Gig.

When upgrading its network to fiber, it worked closely with Amish leaders to develop a solution that would enable the traditional community to take advantage of FTTH capabilities. Previously, Amish users who do not use electricity had telephone service installed in small buildings at the edge of their properties. But without the built-in power source provided by copper, providing power to fiber necessitated a unique approach. The cooperative efforts between GRM and Amish leaders led to a solution that relies upon solar power and car batteries as the power source. In addition to not requiring an electrical connection, users can obtain needed equipment from the local hardware store.

GRM serves other community needs, as well. Many students come from households that cannot afford broadband. In addition to offering schools discounted service that supports open Wi-Fi networks, GRM provides the six libraries in its service area with free broadband. This enables students to pursue schoolwork and also enables parents to pay bills, research employment opportunities and submit job applications.

GRM also supports local economic development with both large and small companies. A 1,200-employee hog plant utilizes 30 GRM broadband connections. An auto supplies firm specializing in racing parts and tools has become a leading e-commerce retailer in its field, growing from a three-person shop to employ 29 people.

Broadband powers the networks upon which customers, students and businesses rely. GRM’s commitment to its communities ensures those networks remain strong and evolve to meet current and future needs.
